MPS (multipurpose solution）is a soft contact lens care product(quasi drug) used to clean, rinse, disinfect, and store soft contact lenses, that has been on sale since 1996　in Japan.

It is said that the number of patients with acanthamoeba keratitis is ncreasing rapidly, and 90 % of these patients are MPS users,in particular users who replace their contact lenses every two weeks. 　.

The diagnosis and treatment of acanthamoeba keratitis is difficult and patients may lose their sight if their conditions worsen.

On December 16th 2009, we submitted a written request to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), Consumer Agency, and Consumer Committee to prevent acanthamoeba keratitis in MPS users.


＜Our Request Outline>

We request that the MHLW and Consumer Agency:

１. Immediately warn MPS users about the risk of acanthamoeba keratitis.

２. Set up a MHLW survey committee to carry out a fact finding survey in order to investigate the cause of acanthamoeba keratitis in ＭＰＳ users, and to publish the results of the survey.

３. Establish appropriate test methods to confirm the effect of disinfection on acanthamoeba keratitis, which is required in the marketing application procedures for MPS.
