Berotec Aerosol (fenoterol hydrobromide)
Berotec (Fenoterol) was the very first medicine we took up since our activities began in 1997.
We sent a letter to Nippon Boehringem to suspend Berotec sales, and conducted a wide campaign in 1997.
In 1998, we held a symposium. Dr.Julian Crane, a former director of the Wellington Asthma Research Group gave a lecture on the epidemiological link between the use of Berotec and the death rate among asthma patients in New Zealand.
After our campaign, Berotec sales decreased sharply by one third in 3 years, and the death rate among asthma sufferers in Japan also decreased to 60 %.
In the cases of 5 patients who had died of the side effects of Berotec, we helped their families apply for the Relief System for Sufferers from Adverse Drug Reactions. The families received compensation.
